Motivational Business Quote: “What comes easy for you but comes rather hard for others is where opportunity lies.” - Peter Drucker
In part 1 of the series, How Hard are You Willing to Work we explored the reality that business success requires more hard work than most could imagine but it is this hard work that ultimately separates us from the competitive pack. In this, the second part of the series, YOU and I will explore tapping vital sources of motivation necessary to carry us through.
Get Motivated!
When the idea to start a business comes to us, like a child with a new toy we get excited but as the daily realities of marketing, promotion, paying the bills and not to mention daily life set in; we find ourselves needing the cup refilled.
Refilling My Cup: Some Things I Do…
- Talk to my wife: My wife Jilda is the most spiritually guided person I know and the one who pushed me to start my business in the first place, so she is a natural energy source for me.
- Read a good blog: I follow many creative bloggers (Darren Rowse, Chris Brogan, Joan Stewart ) and there is always a motivating new idea above the fold within their communities.
- Tap the Third Tribe: I am a member of Third Tribe Marketing an online community founded by several new media influencers and built around the idea of bringing smart online marketers together who live by the philosophy, “you get what you give” and they are a great support group and idea bank.
- Exercise: Yes, nothing like a little sweat and that euphoric runner’s high to wipe the slate clean. My elliptical trainer is also one of my favorite places to blog.
- Call my cousin: My cousin ran a wildly successful real estate development firm in our home town of Chicago that (like so many) closed its doors due to the weakened economy but he did not skip a beat in starting another venture that has begun to bare fruit (Turbo Athletics - Chicago Speed and Agility Training). He is nothing short of a one man power station and is sure to turn my mood.
Man, I feel recharged already!
Where do you turn when your enthusiasm dwindles?

I try to find someone else who I can help - not only is it reaffirming of my abilities and good ideas, but it fulfills the “pay it forward” responsibility of being an engaged member of the business community. It’s definitely motivating.

Shayna,
Ooh, I like the way you think. Tell me about the last person/business you helped?

The very last person I helped was a wedding photographer who was wondering how to change her branding to be more appealing to our market. She was looking for someone with knowledge of our local brides, and we sat down for a couple of hours and looked at it from a bunch of different perspectives. Since then she’s made a ton of positive changes both to the image she’s putting out and just her approach to networking.
I meet with people (even “competitors” who I prefer to consider colleagues) like that all the time. They happen to need to know something that is easy for me to address…and I always learn something from them. I was just thinking about reaching out to someone today because I needed a little motivation “bump.”
It’s a great topic!

Sayna,
Glad today’s topic was helpful and I hope the video provided some inspiration. I am impressed by the way you are reaching out. You know a rising tide lifts all boats, so as that photographer’s profile raises you come along for the ride.
Your perspective on copetition is also very healthy. Heck, we can’t serve everyone and you are more useful to prospective clients if you don’t have to say no, so passing a prospect along to a qualified “competitor” is great way to serve. If you have built a relationship with your colleague he or she will probably do likewise.
Keep doing your Third Tribe thing! I will be watching…

Whenever I journal, I always receive some NEW insights or inspiration. Journaling for me allows me to slow down and de-plug from the busy Matrix of life and connect with my inner self. Some journal entries are brief while others are longer. But regardless of the length, I am always am more inspired than when I first started writing.
I also have an inner circle of loved ones (i.e. my weekly mastermind conversations, my Bible study groups, my couple friends with whom Syreeta and I fellowship) who are resources for me to be real as I request their feedback and insights to something I’m dealing with.
My wife and I have recently launched our blog site at http://www.InspireYourFamily.com to serve as a catalyst for connecting and empowering more couples and families. There is no such thing as self-made.
