What Mr. Rogers Taught Me About Sales

It is survivors law that if you are in business you need customers to buy but how you go about making this happen is the difference between a business that soars or sinks. Anyone who knows me understands that I live by the rule “you get what you give” and until you have made a meaningful investment in helping your prospects, you haven’t won the right to introduce your products or services. Thanks Mr. Rogers for the lesson.

The other day I started following someone on Twitter who from his status updates (Tweets) seemed like an interesting enough person; that is until he started sending me pitches for a service he recently launched.  That’s right not even a hello or how are you doing?

The strategy of help…

Up front if you live to serve, to help; you will be rich in relationships, trust, authority and not to mention restful sleep knowing that you are not viewed as the newest con-man on the scene. From a monetary standpoint the strategy is equally effective as reciprocity kicks in and those you helped really work hard to return the favor by offering referrals, service trades, helpful resources and purchases.

Replace a few of those “buy now”, “order this immediately” and related pitches with free information that can help your customers and clients. A free ebook, educational article or tips sheet will serve as the necessary handshake giving you the right to make the ask.

The next time you get frustrated after receiving a bad report from your accountant, find a charity and donate your services. Its the cure for what ails you and your business.

    Great post! I used to be chummy in a Twitter sort of way with a guru type social media marketing guy. Very nice, very knowledgeable. I even hired him and he did a great job helping me with things. I paid his asking fee and I felt like I got my money’s worth.

    So, I’m on FaceBook a while back and suddenly, that annoying little chat thing pops up. You know the one that people use because they see you are online and they think they can interrupt you with some question or other.

    Anyway, it popped up and there he was. First he said Hi, how are you, you know nice stuff. Asked me how the family was. I replied in kind.

    Then, bam!! “Hey, today’s the last day for my program early bird discount — can you tell your friends while we’re here?”

    Collapse chat window and unfriend.

    So I see your point and feel your pain. Just get rid of them, that’s what I say.

    Oh! And the last person I helped was about 5 minutes ago when I logged into her account to set up her FaceBook page because she is super busy and just needed a kick start to get started. It took me 60 seconds and I know she appreciated it.

    Wow Donna, he tried to go for the okie doke! Well, good defense on your part. You are right it is easy to deal with such people.

    The real lesson is not the defensive strategy rather the offensive one; “stop pitching and start helping”. The business will flow and you will sleep better. The old saying still holds true that people do business with those they LIKE and TRUST. When you help people you get both big time!

    You are an amazing help to your Tribe. Keep teaching us…
